Giving ice cream to your dog: is it a good idea? It’s true that in the summertime, there’s nothing better than ice cream to give us a good dose of freshness. And it works so well that many of us are tempted to also give some to the dog to cool him down a bit too.
But is that a good thing? Is it good for him? Won’t it make him sick? Find out whether or not you can give your dog ice cream.
Giving ice cream to your dog: not such a good idea!
When it’s really too hot, giving your dog ice cream can be tempting. But although ice cream is not particularly dangerous, according to specialists, it is not good for him. Even so, ice cream is not without consequences, as it can cause digestive problems.
Giving ice cream to your dog: no nutritional benefit
First of all, you should know that ice has no nutritional value. It consists mainly of water, sugars, some fruits, and fat for ice cream. So ice cream will not provide your dog with anything but extra calories.
As you can see, it doesn’t provide your dog with anything at all. But it’s not particularly dangerous either. So you can give him ice cream, but only in small amounts. A few small lamps should be enough if you want to refresh him. But of course, it should not become a habit. To preserve his weight, and therefore his health in the long term, you should only give him some occasionally.
Giving your dog ice cream: the risks of indigestion
While giving him ice may not kill him, it may still make him uncomfortable. It is well known that most dogs have poor digestion of dairy products. However, it must be admitted that ice cream and sorbets still contain a significant amount of it.
If your dog suffers from lactose intolerance as a result, there is no question of giving him ice cream. Similarly, if he has some allergies, it is best to avoid ice cream, as his body may not be able to digest lactose either. In both cases, if the ice cream is poorly digested, he may suffer from diarrhea and vomiting.
Giving ice cream to your dog is not forbidden!
As you can see, it is not a good idea to give your dog ice cream to cool him down a bit. But it is not forbidden. To protect him and to ensure that your gesture does not have any harmful consequences for him, it is better to take a few precautions.
Ice creams to be avoided at all costs
First, remember that if he is lactose intolerant, you should not give him milk-based ice cream. But that’s not all! As ice cream comes in different flavors and may also have different ingredients, you should also make sure your dog doesn’t consume ingredients that could be fatal to him.
This is the case, for example, with chocolate ice cream. This is because chocolate contains an alkaloid that could be very toxic for your pet.
The same goes for ice cream with raisins or rum raisins. Not to mention the additives in ice cream that can poison your dog.
Ice creams that you can safely give your dog
Ideally, avoid ice creams loaded with coloring and additives. Choose the most natural ice cream possible, if you can find any. But the safest thing to do is to give it homemade ice cream, that is to say, that you will have made it yourself. This is the only way you can control the number of ingredients and protect your pet in the best possible way.
Don’t worry, it’s not very complicated. You can make ice cream by simply freezing low-lactose yogurt in ice cube molds, for example. You can also make salted ice cream. You just have to freeze meat or poultry broth in your molds. You’ll see, he’ll love it! Or you can simply freeze pieces of fruit that you can give him when it’s too hot.
